MC/3 BUCHAREST 2013

MC/3 is a new iteration of the prototypical research on modular structures, as part of the Minimal Complexity series. Form-finding algorithms are used to generate periodic minimal surface geometries that are then materialised through an assembly process driven by modularity through repetition of a small set of components. Based on a Hybrid minimal surface, the structure is made of 70 sets of 7 different pieces, digitally cut styrene fixed with aluminium rivets.

Minimal Complexity is a series of prototypes born of a holistic research into the genesis of form and space started in 2009. The self-organisation of matter, conservation of energy, equilibrium are concepts that have driven the creative process, a symbiotic mix of art and science. The analogy with the molecular behaviour of soap bubbles informs the research method, which involves nature inspired algorithms and geometric constraints. Focusing on periodic minimal surfaces, the design process challenges the concepts of multi-dimensional symmetry and repetition, creating modular continuous surfaces that are infinitely expandable.

A MODULAR SYSTEM

This line of research explores new spatial qualities, material effects and volumetric intricacy through continuous surface geometries and modular systems created from the repetition of identical cellular components. Form-finding algorithms are used to generate periodic minimal surface geometries that are then materialised through an assembly process driven by modularity.

Based on a Hybrid minimal surface, the structure is made of 70 sets of 7 different pieces, digitally cut styrene fixed with aluminium rivets. The resulting prototypes open-up opportunities at various scales in architecture, product and fashion design.

MC/3 in the permanent collection of

Hugo Voeten Art Centre Belgium

MC/3 upon being exhibited at EBienale, the International Contemporary Art Biennale within the George Enescu International Festival and Galateca in Bucharest in 2013,  is now part of the permanent exhibition of the Hugo Voeten Art Centre in Belgium. The piece is on display alongside a series of works by acclaimed international artists such as Ai Weiwei‘s ‘Fairytale – 1001 chairs’ installation.
